Sleep and Recovery: The Part of Training You Do Lying Down
A workout is a request. Your body answers it afterwards, while you rest. If the rest is missing, the same sessions feel harder and the habit gets harder to keep.
How much sleep adults need
| Age | Recommended sleep per day (CDC) |
|---|---|
| 18–60 | 7 or more hours |
| 61–64 | 7–9 hours |
| 65 and older | 7–8 hours |
Six habits the CDC recommends
- Go to bed and get up at the same time every day.
- Keep your bedroom quiet, relaxing and cool.
- Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
- Avoid large meals and alcohol before bedtime.
- Avoid caffeine in the afternoon or evening.
- Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet.
The last one works in both directions: regular activity is on the CDC’s list of habits for better sleep, and better sleep makes the next session easier to start.
Rest days are part of the plan
A beginner plan with lighter days built in is not being soft. Those days keep the routine alive while your muscles adapt. Skipping them to “catch up” usually costs more sessions than it gains.

A short wind-down before bed
Two slow stretches from the Before Bed routine in the CaliStart Mobility Guide. Breathe out longer than you breathe in.

Knees to Chest
- Lie on your back with your knees bent.
- Bring both knees in and hug them toward your chest.
- Hold and breathe slowly.
Form cue: Keep your head and shoulders relaxed on the floor.

Lying Twist
- Lie on your back with your arms out to the sides.
- Bring one knee across your body toward the floor on the opposite side.
- Keep both shoulders down. Hold, then switch sides.
Form cue: Let gravity do the work — don’t force the knee down.
After a bad night
- Do the session anyway if you feel fine, at the easier versions.
- If you feel unwell or dizzy, skip it and do the next one tomorrow. Don’t double up.
- One short night changes little. A pattern of them is worth fixing before adding more training.
If you regularly sleep badly despite good habits, talk to your doctor.
